Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion. Since the acquisition, GitHub has operated as an independent subsidiary within Microsoft's organizational structure. This move was part of Microsoft's broader corporate strategy.

GitHub is integrated with OpenAI’s technologies, such as OpenAI AI-assisted code review, code suggestions, and automated documentation. These integrations are aimed at helping OpenAI sell and market their products for a huge user base of developers.
