NPM is the default package manager for JavaScript/Node.js and the largest package repository in the world, NPM serves as critical infrastructure for the JavaScript ecosystem. Microsoft acquired NPM through GitHub in 2020, consolidating control over developer tools. This centralized nature of NPM means that Microsoft effectively controls a critical piece of internet infrastructure used by developers worldwide Unfortunately for the JavaScript ecosystem there's no clear alternative to NPM.

The acquisition raises concerns that Microsoft "ultimately 'owns' or controls the future of JavaScript", with Microsoft owning GitHub, NPM and heavily influence TypeScript.
